  12. sweet and light enough for the kids, sexy and suspenseful enough
  13. for mature adults.

  15.     WORKING GIRL. Pert secretary Melanie Griffith climbs the
  16. corporate ladder, dislodging career gal Sigourney Weaver and
  17. claiming hunky Harrison Ford in Mike Nichols' suave tale about
  18. getting it all on your own sweet terms.

  22.     WE. Pulitzer prize winner Charles Fuller (A Soldier's Play)
  23. launches an earnest, poignant cycle of five black history dramas,
  24. beginnning with Sally and Prince, in repertory off Broadway.

  26.     EASTERN STANDARD. Insider trading, bag ladies, AIDS and
  27. nouvelle cuisine -- everything '80s gets skewered, then
  28. sentimentalized, in this stylish satire transferred to Broadway.

  30.     FRANKIE AND JOHNNY IN THE CLAIR DE LUNE. Kathy Bates returns
  31. to the role she winsomely originated in Terrence McNally's off
  32. Broadway hit about love between two lonely losers.

  34.     PLATONOV. Romanian director Liviu Ciulei blends farce and great
  35. sadness in Chekhov's early drama, at Harvard's American Repertory
  36. Theater.

  40.     THE MODERN JAZZ QUARTET: FOR ELLINGTON (East-West). Part
  41. homage, part re-invention, this is a ravishing tribute by one of
  42. the premier jazz groups to one of America's greatest composers. The
  43. MJQ pay the Duke the ultimate honor: they don't just respect him,
  44. they make him swing.

  46.     HANDEL: MESSIAH  (Archiv). O thou that tellest good tidings:
  47. Handel's hardy perennial gets a definitive performance from Trevor
  48. Pinnock and the English Concert & Choir. Hallelujah!

  50.     SCHUBERT: SYMPHONY NO. 9 (Virgin). Charles Mackerras leads the
  51. Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in the aptly nicknamed
  52. "Great" C Major Symphony, on original instruments.

  54.     THE TRAVELING WILBURYS, VOL. 1 (Wilbury Records). They look
  55. and sound a lot like George Harrison, Bob Dylan and other famous
  56. folk. Could it possibly be? The mystery is thin, but the sounds are
  57. joyous, making this the good-time record of the year.
